The Federal Public Defender for the District of Oregon is accepting applications from experienced criminal defense attorneys for an Assistant Federal Public Defender position to join our Eugene office in providing an excellent defense for indigent defendants charged with federal crimes.
The Assistant Federal Public Defender (AFPD) provides every aspect of legal representation to individuals charged with federal criminal offenses but who are unable to retain an attorney. Duties include trials and court hearings, direct appeals to the circuit court, habeas, post-conviction and witness representation, and representation in other matters such as supervised release hearings and probation and parole hearings.
Applicant must be capable of immediately undertaking the defense of major criminal cases in the United States District Court, as well as in the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Applicant must be a graduate of an accredited law school and an active member in good standing of the bar in any state, territory or possession. Applicant must have recent, substantial criminal trial experience; be team-oriented; exhibit strong writing skills; as well as a commitment to criminal defense for all individuals, including those who may be facing the death penalty. Writing ability, federal court, and immigration law experience will be given preference. Spanish-language skills are also relevant for this position.

Additional Salary Information: Starting salary commensurate with experience per US Courts guidelines. Compensation also includes federal government employee benefits: paid federal holidays, paid vacation, paid sick leave, health and life insurance, retirement, and the Thrift Savings Plan. This position is “at-will,” excepted service, and does not carry the tenure rights of the competitive Civil Service. Salary is paid biweekly, and payable only by direct deposit.
