Duties and responsibilities: Principal responsibility for advising the Inspector General (IG) and office staff on legal issues related to the OIG mandate to prevent and detect fraud, waste, abuse and illegal acts. The Assistant Inspector General for Legal Affairs (AIG-Legal) serves as the chief legal representative of the OIG, and advises the IG on major policy decisions on a day-to-day basis. The AIG-Legal assists the IG in defining OIG goals and objectives and directs the activities of the Legal Division. The AIG-Legal will assist in the development of internal policies and procedures designed to promote operational accountability.
The AIG-Legal oversees the issuance of subpoenas for documents and all legal analyses by office staff. The AIG-Legal also liaises with prosecutorial entities on a case-by-case basis. The AIG-Legal handles civil recovery actions, false claim recovery actions, and actions for enforcement of subpoenas and summonses.
The AIG-Legal reviews and approves all reports, press releases, legal analyses, legislation and correspondence generated by office staff prior to approval by the IG. The AIG-Legal attends meetings with government officials and agencies when required and represents the IG in meetings and public forums when so directed. The AIG-Legal may provide certain legal analysis to public officials when appropriate upon approval by the IG. The AIG-Legal assesses and recommends to the IG training and resources needed by legal staff to ensure the effectiveness of the division and the OIG.
Desired candidate should have a proven ability to work with all divisions within an OIG type-setting. Desired candidate should also have a working knowledge of and familiarity with governmental procurement and human resources.
Qualifications: Candidate is required to possess a license to practice law in the state of Louisiana. (Your eligibility to practice law in the State of Louisiana will be verified through the Louisiana State Bar Association website). Seven years of full-time experience as a practicing attorney is preferred.
