Facebook is seeking a highly motivated team player with a passion for online intellectual property matters to serve as Counsel, IP. The role will tackle cutting-edge issues on a global scale arising from content posted by users on Facebook, Instagram, and the company’s other services. There will be a special focus on copyright, including with respect to videos, music, Facebook’s Rights Manager tool, and intermediary liability and notice-and-takedown legal regimes. Days are fast-paced and action-packed, and the ideal candidate will be eager to roll up their sleeves and problem-solve on matters of all kinds. The position is highly cross-functional, working closely with other legal teams and key business units, including the company’s operations, partnerships, sales, business development, and engineering teams.
Develop and apply policies relating to copyright infringement and similar violations arising from videos and other content posted by users on the company’s services, including Facebook and Instagram
Provide legal guidance on incoming IP reports submitted by copyright owners and other rights holders identifying infringing content posted by users
Advise business units and cross-functional teams on matters relating to copyright infringement and issues arising under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), E-Commerce Directive, and similar laws
Coordinate copyright, intermediary liability, and notice-and-takedown matters with a worldwide network of outside counsel
JD degree (or foreign equivalent) and membership in at least one US state bar
2+ years of intellectual property experience, from in-house or at a law firm
Experience with legal matters involving copyright infringement and IP doctrines such as fair use and repeat infringement
Experience with IP intermediary liability issues and laws (DMCA, E-Commerce Directive, etc.)
Experience with obligations of online intermediaries in the US and elsewhere, including notice-and-takedown
Experience assessing legal risks, as well as practical, business, and reputational risks
Experience leading and multi-tasking on competing priorities and projects
