The Legal and Operations Team is responsible for driving one of the most complex political financial operations in the country. As part of this team, the In-House Counsel plays a key role in supporting the work of ActBlue’s legal department and will work closely with senior legal and operational staff to accomplish that. This is a full-time, entry-level position and is perfect for someone with an interest or experience in politics and campaign finance law.
Provide general legal support for ActBlue’s day-to-day operations by:
Conducting legal research and providing counsel on a wide variety of topics, including campaign finance, HR and employment, intellectual property, compliance, nonprofit and tax-exempt organization law, and more;
Providing support for contracting across the organization, including drafting templates, reviewing agreements, and organizing and tracking executed contracts;
Liaising with outside counsel on these and other issues as necessary.
Collaborate with ActBlue’s political operations and campaign finance teams by:
Conducting research on campaign finance laws and regulations and providing legal analysis for the purpose of facilitating the expansion of ActBlue’s tools and reach;
Drafting advisory opinion requests to regulators that address novel applications of the law to our activities;
Working closely with ActBlue’s Compliance team to respond to campaign finance complaints or inquiries filed with regulatory agencies or in court;
Tracking relevant legislation and staying up to date on laws and regulations that impact ActBlue’s business on state, federal, and local levels.
Maintain ActBlue’s status as a tax-exempt organization by:
Fielding questions about tax-exempt status from staff members;
Managing state charitable organization registrations;
Assisting with data collection and completion of annual independent audits of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations.
A practicing attorney: You have a JD and admission to at least one state bar, with 1- 2 years of experience practicing law. You’re skilled at performing legal research, as well as writing about and analyzing what you’ve learned.
An excellent communicator: You have strong interpersonal skills, along with an ability to work collaboratively across teams and disciplines. You also know how to explain complex ideas in ways that make sense to everyone.
Highly detailed: You proofread, reread, and triple-check your work. You understand that details play a large role in setting ActBlue up for success.
Organized and efficient: All systems can be made better and more streamlined — help us move ours in the right direction! We need someone who is great at keeping their own work in order and can help our team as a whole stay organized as well.
Comfortable going solo: While you’ll be working in a larger team, most of your day-to-day work will be independently driven and managed.
Someone who knows their stuff: You have demonstrated experience, knowledge, or interest regarding campaign finance and political law, and/or tax-exempt organization law.
Mission-driven: Our online fundraising technology makes it easy for more supporters to participate in the political process every day. ActBlue’s office is located in Davis Square in Somerville, MA, just a few blocks from Boston’s MBTA Red Line train. This posting is for a full-time, in-office, salaried position.
