We are accepting applications from experienced criminal defense attorneys for an Assistant Federal Public Defender position in our Medford office.
The Medford office of the Federal Public Defender – District of Oregon is a very small, collegial office with a good professional relationship with the US Attorney’s office and the court. Residents of Medford have excellent access to outdoor recreation activities: the Mount Ashland Ski Area and the Oregon Coast are a short drive away, as is backpacking in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness area and the world-class rafting and fly?fishing found on the Rogue River. In addition, nearby Ashland is home to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Southern Oregon University.

Application review will begin on October 31st, initial interviews are expected to take place in early November in Portland, OR or via Skype, with a follow up interview and visit to Medford for promising candidates. Applicant must be capable of immediately undertaking the defense of major criminal cases in the United States District Court, as well as in the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Applicant must be a graduate of an accredited law school and an active member in good standing of the bar in any state, territory or possession. Applicant must have recent, substantial criminal defense experience; be team-oriented; exhibit strong writing skills; as well as a commitment to criminal defense for all individuals, including those who may be facing the death penalty. Writing ability, federal court, and trial experience will be given preference. Spanish language skills are also relevant for this position.
Hiring is provisional pending the successful completion of a background check and investigation.
Additional Salary Information: Starting salary commensurate with experience. Compensation also includes federal government employee benefits: paid federal holidays, paid vacation, paid sick leave, health and life insurance, retirement, and the Thrift Savings Plan. This position is “at?will,” excepted service, and does not carry the tenure rights of the competitive Civil Service. Salary is paid biweekly, payable only by direct deposit.
