The National Association for Law Placement (NALP) invites nominations and applications for the position of executive director. This is an exceptional opportunity for an innovative and dynamic thought leader to advance the nation’s premier association for legal career professionals in education and practice. NALP is at a pivotal moment after 50 years of serving the legal community. The Association is in a strong financial position, and it has the largest number of members in its history. At the same time, the legal field and the recruiting and employment landscape are shifting quickly, which creates opportunity for innovation driven by NALP and its members. The next executive director has an opportunity to leverage NALP’s core strengths to lead the Association into its next chapter.
Established in 1971, NALP is the singular association of legal career professionals who are dedicated to facilitating legal career counseling and planning, recruitment and retention, and the professional development of law students and lawyers, while increasing and championing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the legal industry. NALP believes in fairness, facts, and the power of a diverse community. Members are united by three fundamental beliefs: 1) all law students and lawyers should benefit from a fair and ethical hiring process; 2) law students and lawyers are more successful when supported by professional development and legal career professionals; and 3) a diverse, equitable, and inclusive legal profession best serves clients and communities. These shared beliefs drive NALP to collect and publish accurate legal employment data and information, and to champion education, fair and equitable recruitment processes, professional development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion in the industry.
Reporting to a 14-member board of directors, the executive director has broad responsibility for the 3,000-member association and leads a staff of 13 experienced employees and oversees a $4.5 million budget. Working with a diverse group of stakeholders and dedicated staff, the next executive director will create a compelling vision and strategy for NALP as the Association enters its next semi-centennial. In particular, the executive director will champion diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization and across the industry, deepen engagement with membership, and further diversify revenue sources.
The next executive director is expected to have senior-level organizational leadership experience or capabilities, outstanding analytic and systems thinking skills, a track record of innovation, exceptional communication skills, and business acumen. The ideal candidate will also have subject matter expertise in the legal employment industry, or the demonstrated ability to quickly develop this expertise.
