About Northeast Legal Aid
NLA MISSION STATEMENT
Northeast Legal Aid and the Northeast Justice Center — together through their respective boards, management, and staff — ("NLA/NJC") help low-income and elderly people of Northeast Massachusetts obtain justice and empowerment through skillful, creative, and persistent advocacy for systemic change and high-quality individual representation.
ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY
Northeast Legal Aid, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit and it has a subsidiary Northeast Justice Center (referred to hereinafter jointly as “NLA”). NLA and its predecessor organizations have delivered free legal aid to the indigent and the elderly in fifty-six (56) cities and towns in Northeastern Massachusetts for the past fifty-three (53) years. NLA maintains offices in Lynn, Lawrence, Lowell and a new limited-hours-office in Haverhill. In a typical year, NLA closes approximately two thousand (2,000) cases and fields between six thousand (6,000) and seven thousand (7,000) requests for free legal services. NLA’s clients are the indigent and the elderly. The types of legal services provided include: housing law; public benefits law; family law; elder law; consumer protection law; employment law; immigration law, discrimination law, and aid to victims of crime.
