The Arthur J. Morris Law Library at the University of Virginia School of Law seeks an Archivist to serve as a key member of its Special Collections and Digital Collections departments. Reporting to the Law Library’s Head of Special Collections, the Archivist will be responsible for accessioning, preserving, arranging, describing, and making accessible the Law Library’s archival and rare book collection, which includes a rich and wide-ranging array of materials relating to the legal history of Virginia and the institutional history of the Law School. The Archivist will join an inspired and collaborative team of archivists and librarians dedicated to ensuring that these collections are accessible, engaging, and understandable for a diverse range of patrons.
The Archivist will have chief responsibility for collecting and processing the official records of the Law School, as well as records from individuals and groups within the Law School community. The Archivist will process physical and digital archival materials and create standards-compliant finding aids and records in ArchivesSpace, MARC format, and other appropriate discovery platforms. They will perform collections management activities, such as conducting condition and preservation assessments and recommending appropriate access policies. They may oversee student and temporary workers supporting archival processing. The Archivist will acquire a deep familiarity with the collection and will provide excellent reference services to its diverse users.
As a key partner in Digital Collections, the Archivist will identify materials that are candidates for digitization, integrate finding aids and related records into the Library’s online holdings, revise legacy finding aids, and process born-digital materials. The Archivist will advise and collaborate on metadata strategies for enhancing access and discoverability of online guides and digitized materials.
The Archivist will participate in professional development activities. They will maintain knowledge of current and emerging best practices, standards, and trends in the field and will report on these developments to the Special Collections and Digital Collections team. They will develop and maintain documentation of archival processing workflows and tools and will collaborate creatively with Law Library and University colleagues to align practices across the institution and within the field. This position requires most work to be performed in person at the Law School with the opportunity to perform a limited amount of work remotely in accordance with Law School policy.
Professional Experience and Education:
- Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution or a related degree with a concentration in archives.
- Two years of experience in an archival or special collections library environment.
- Knowledge of archival theory, practice, and technologies, including digitization and processing born-digital materials.
- Demonstrated experience in arranging, describing, and preserving manuscript and/or archival collections.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with Encoded Archival Description (EAD), Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) formats, and ArchivesSpace.
- Knowledge and understanding of archival descriptive standards, particularly Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS).
- Ability to foster a respectful, inclusive, cooperative, and professional work environment with diverse colleagues and patrons.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to lift 20 pounds and climb step stools, stairs, and short ladders.
- Experience using Archivematica, Archive-IT, ePADD, Drupal, and/or other content management and archiving systems is desirable.
- Experience with rare book cataloging and/or description or interest in learning is desirable.
- Demonstrated experience providing reference services is desirable.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
