T-Mobile’s Legal Affairs team is hiring a Principal Corporate Counsel to lead and enhance its best-in-class financial operations and compliance programs. Reporting to the Director of Legal Affairs this attorney is a critical member of T-Mobile’s legal organization, working on ground breaking financial services offerings and supporting key back-office finance and operations functions to advance T-Mobile’s Un-carrier promise. This attorney will work on initiatives supporting T-Mobile’s equipment financing programs, payment systems and products, credit and collections operations, fraud operations and provide advice and counseling for back-office functions. The attorney will work cross-functionally with a range of departments including finance, product and technology, marketing, government affairs, compliance, litigation, privacy and more. A successful candidate will be part of a dynamic, fast-paced, strong, collaborative team to help ensure the business execution and operation is in alignment with legal and regulatory obligations.
What you’ll do in your role.
Provide counseling and mentorship to improve existing and develop new processes and procedures to meet local, state, and federal laws pertaining to T-Mobiles equipment financing programs.
Rigorously analyze product structures and advise on strategy, data sharing, use, governance and compliance for our financial services products and services including in the credit, collections, payments, and fraud operations.
Serve as a deep subject matter authority in specialty areas including payments, payment products and compliance, including but not limited to PCI.
Develop an understanding of our current and proposed product offerings, operational systems and platforms and services in support of our fraud teams.
Work closely with business leaders and legal colleagues to provide practical guidance regarding state and federal compliance and regulatory obligations including but not limited to TILA, OFAC, SCRA, UDAAP, ESIGN, AML, BSA, FACTA, GLBA, Reg Z, FACTA, FCRA, Reg M, ADA, State Retail Installment Sales Acts and Truth In Billing.
Assist in the development of resources, processes, and knowledge management tools for use by clients, colleagues and team members.
Support the drafting, review, and negotiation of a broad range of contracts to support the business operations for the finance organization.
The experience you’ll bring.
10+ years proven experience practicing in a combination of firm and in-house counsel positions, preferably in a role of a technology or fintech company.
Strong understanding of consumer protection and financial services compliance obligations at a state and federal level.
An understanding of the traditional wireless business model and key consumer protection and risk management strategies involved in a consumer business.
Ability to recognize and weigh business and legal risks and help advance innovative solutions.
Experience identifying and diagnosing legal problems and articulating creative and practical solutions and alternatives.
Knowledge of, and high degree of proficiency at drafting and negotiating contracts.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and customer focused interpersonal skills.
Provide mentoring and sponsorship to attorneys and legal professionals (no direct management responsibilities).
Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school. Admission to a state bar, with the ability to become a licensed attorney or in-house counsel.
